2. Job Description
The Local Baker is a specialized retail role focused on producing high-quality baked goods to meet daily customer demand. You will be responsible for the entire baking process—from raw material preparation to the final display of fresh bread, pastries, and cakes. This role requires a blend of technical skill, efficiency, and a passion for food safety to ensure Pick n Pay remains the preferred “fresh” destination for the local community.
3. Key Responsibilities
- Production: Prepare, bake, and finish a wide variety of bakery products (bread, rolls, pastries, cakes) according to standard recipe specifications.
- Quality Control: Conduct regular quality checks to ensure all products meet Pick n Pay’s “Freshness” standards before they reach the shelf.
- Merchandising: Ensure the bakery department is fully stocked and ready for trade by store opening; rotate stock using the FEFO/FIFO (First Expired, First Out) principle.
- Food Safety & Hygiene: Adhere strictly to HACCP and health and safety regulations; maintain a clean work area and sanitize equipment daily.
- Waste Management: Monitor production levels to minimize “shrinkage” (waste) while ensuring sufficient stock for customers.
- Customer Service: Respond to customer queries regarding special orders (e.g., platters or cakes) and product availability in a courteous manner.
4. Work Etiquette & Competencies
- Punctuality: Retail baking often starts in the early morning hours; reliability and being on time are critical.
- Integrity: Following “the book” regarding recipes and safety standards without cutting corners.
- Teamwork: Supporting colleagues in other service areas (Deli/Butchery) during peak periods or “all-hands” store events.
- Customer-Centricity: Approaching every task with the mindset of “the customer comes first,” maintaining a neat appearance and professional demeanor.
- Resilience: The ability to work under pressure during busy holiday seasons and month-end peaks.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 / Matric.
- Qualification: Professional Bakery qualification (NQF 3) is highly advantageous.
- Experience: 1–2 years of experience in a retail bakery or commercial environment.
