Role Overview: The Backbone of the Yard
As a General Assistant in the Building Department, you are responsible for the “heavy lifting” of the store’s operations. Your primary goal is to ensure that customers and delivery trucks are loaded accurately and quickly, while maintaining a safe, organized, and profitable yard environment.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Loading
- Precision Loading: Promptly and accurately load customer vehicles, delivery trucks, and transfer trucks.
- Product Knowledge: Use your understanding of building materials to assist customers with their purchases and provide excellent service.
- Manual Labor: Perform tasks such as the bagging of stone and sand.
Stock & Inventory Control
- Stock Stacking: Ensure heavy building materials are stacked safely and neatly to prevent breakages and accidents.
- Inventory Accuracy: Count stock numerically and participate in perpetual stocktakes (regular, ongoing counts rather than just once a year).
- Reporting: Immediately report any stock shortages or breakages to management to prevent financial losses.
Housekeeping & Safety
- Yard Maintenance: Keep the work area tidy by sweeping and upholding high housekeeping standards to ensure the Yard runs efficiently.
- Team Support: Assist with “pulling” stock for inter-branch transfers and perform any tasks delegated by your supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Matric or equivalent.
- Experience: At least 1 year in a similar hardware or warehouse role is preferred.
- Physicality: High level of physical fitness and stamina is required for heavy lifting.
- Numeracy: The ability to count stock accurately is essential to prevent stock losses.
- Communication: Effective verbal communication skills.
