Role Overview: Entrepreneurial Mindset & Book Passion
The company is looking for a manager who takes total ownership—running the branch as if it were their own business. Beyond administrative and inventory controls, this role requires deep, broad literary and genre knowledge to guide customers, organize author events, and build a vibrant reading community in the Greenstone area.
Key Responsibilities
1. Store Leadership & Staff Development
- Team Guidance: Supervise, mentor, and support the Assistant Manager, Booksellers, and floor staff.
- Internal Mobility: Train and grow team members to prepare them for internal promotions within the group.
- Culture: Maintain a warm, welcoming, and high-energy working environment while driving team morale.
2. Sales Performance & Expense Management
- Target Achievement: Monitor daily and weekly sales figures to ensure the store consistently meets or exceeds its monthly turnover budgets.
- Profitability: Drive sales while strictly managing controllable expenses to maximize store margins.
- Incentive Tracking: Keep the team focused and motivated to achieve monthly incentive metrics.
3. Inventory, POS & Operational Security
- Stock & Shrinkage: Oversee inventory levels, stock rotation, shrinkage mitigation, and physical security controls.
- Merchandising: Utilize POS data and market trends to optimize book layouts, promotional tables, and window displays.
- Floor Presence: Actively work on the sales floor alongside the team, which includes physical tasks like receiving, unpacking, and shelf-merchandising heavy book boxes.
4. Community & Event Management
- Local Engagement: Build strong relationships with local readers, suppliers, and South African authors.
- Bookstore Events: Plan, organize, and host store events, book launches, and reading initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience Required
- Education: Minimum Grade 12 / Matric. (A relevant Diploma or Degree is advantageous).
- Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of retail/sales experience.
- Minimum 5 years of direct team/staff management experience (preferably in retail).
- Book Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of books, authors, genres, and reading trends.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with POS systems, inventory management software, and analytical sales tracking.
- Work Schedule: Full willingness to work flexible retail hours (including weekends and public holidays).
